Steak with Rhubarb Sauce

I thought it would be fun to use my homemade rhubarb jam for a non-dessert dish. Here is my rhubarb steak sauce.

After taking a cooked steak out, deglaze the pan with white wine. Add chopped onion and reduce the wine. Add chicken stock, rhubarb jam, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Take the pan off from the heat and add butter.

If you didn’t know there is rhubarb in the sauce, you might not be able to guess what the extra flavor is, but if you know it, you can definitely taste the rhubarb. You just need to taste-test a few times while cooking, to make sure you get the right amount of rhubarb and other ingredients. You want the rhubarb flavor to be subtle but to be there. Just be careful with how much rhubarb jam you want to add; you wouldn’t want to feel you are eating your steak with fruit jam.

ルバーブ入りステーキソース

先日紹介したルバーブ、甘酸っぱい味なので、大抵はデザートに使われるのだけれど、何かデザート以外にも使えないものか、と思って作ってみたのがこれ。

ステーキソース。

ステーキを焼いてフライパンからステーキを出したら、フライパンは洗わず、そこに白ワインとみじん切りにした玉ねぎを入れフライパンに残った茶色い肉汁などをこそいだら中火で沸騰させる。
ワインが半分ほどになったら、チキンストック、ルバーブジャム、バルサミコ酢、しょうゆ、塩、こしょうを加え、よく混ぜる。火を止めてバターを混ぜ入れたら出来上がり。
たっぷりとステーキにかけて。

ルバーブのほのかな酸味はするものの、ジャムを食べているような感覚にならないように作るのがコツ。

昨日土曜日はテリーのいとこが久しぶりに他州からミネソタに里帰りをしたので親戚が集まって公園でポットラック（持ち寄り）ピクニック。
以前は普段会わないような遠い親戚の集まりは苦手だったのだけれど、最近は気を張ることなく楽しめるようになった。
なんでもやっぱり慣れ、というものなんだと思う。
以前はぴったりとテリーの隣にくっついていたものだけれど（笑）、最近は一人でも話す人を見つけることが出来るし、向こうからやってきて話に来てくれる人も沢山出来た。
会う機会が増えれば増えるほど、お互いの趣味やらライフスタイルなんかも分かってきて話を始めやすいし、気分的にも打ち解けてくるものだし。
何といっても、テリーの親戚は皆全体的にフレンドリーな人が多いことに感謝。

で、ピクニックをした公園はうちから約一時間ほど行った町にあり、途中で、面白い店を発見したので、帰りに寄ってみることに。
“Unclaimed Freight　（アンクレームド・フレイト）”、という店。
これは何かというと、輸入したり輸送された荷物で受け取り手が見つからなかったものを売る店。
家具から食料品から食器から衣服まで、何でもアリ。
で、私はこんなものを購入。

キッチンで使う料理用スプーン（こちらではユーテンシルと呼ぶのだけれど日本語だと何？）。
どれもヨーロッパで作られたみたいで、左から、メイド・イン・イタリア、フランス、ポルトガル、スペイン。
どれもしっかりした作りで満足。
しかも、四つで１ドル（約１００円）、という安さ（嬉）。

We had a potluck picnic with family at a park in Milaca yesterday. On our way there we found a place called “Milaca Unclaimed Freight”. We thought it would be fun to visit, and on our way home we stopped by. I found these cool wooden kitchen utensils. They are all made in Europe; from left to right, made in Italy, France, Portugal, and Spain. The quality is great but they were very cheap: four for only one dollar!

Grilled Steak and Red Quinoa One Plate Dinner

This is a kind of meal I can eat everyday. Lots of fresh seasonal vegetables and a perfectly cooked small steak. I love it! Grilled sweet corn, grilled asparagus, fresh avocado slices, and a grilled mini steak were placed on a bed of red quinoa, and served with wasabi sauce (soy sauce, mirin (Japanese sweet sake), wasabi). I’ve seen and heard about quinoa, but this was my first time to try it. It’s easy to cook, and the crunchy texture is amazing!! I’m not sure exactly what it is (it looks like bird food before cooked), but for some reason, I feel it’s good for you. I’m thinking of adding this to soup next time.

グリルステーキとクイノアで、ワンプレートディナー

こういう夕食だったら毎日でもいいなあ、なんて思ってしまう（笑）。

たっぷりの野菜とパーフェクトに焼けた小さいステーキのワンプレートディナー。
野菜はフレッシュなアボカドスライス、グリルしたアスパラガスとスイートコーン。
食べる直前に、わさびだれ（醤油、、みりん、、わさび）をかけて。
スイートコーンは本当に甘くって、この時期沢山沢山食べたいと思う。

下にしいてあるのは、クイノア、というもの。
１５分ぐらいで炊けるし、ぷちぷちとした食感が何とも気に入ってしまった（炊く前は鳥のえさみたいに見えたけどね（笑））。
白いものもあって、私が今回使ったのは、レッド（赤）・クイノア、というもの。
次回はサラダやスープに入れてみたいなあ、なんて思っている。
こういう食感のある穀物って、身体に良さそうな気がしてしまうところも◎。
