We stayed at this beautiful onsen-ryokan (inn with hot spring baths) in Gifu, Japan. This ryokan was called Miyako, and they had four separate guest houses in addition to rooms in their main building. Terry and I stayed at one of their guest houses. The house was decorated beautifully with unique antiques, which reflects the owner’s great sense of interior design.

今回の日本帰国中、温泉に行く機会は、三重県の鳥羽と岐阜県の下呂温泉、と二度。　今回紹介するのは下呂温泉で滞在したみやこという旅館。こちらは本館の部屋に加えて、離れの客室が４部屋あって、今回テリーと私は、“雨音（下写真）”と呼ばれるこちらの離れに滞在。オーナーのセンスのよさがあふれるインテリアは一見の価値アリ。私達の部屋はどちらかというと、アジアンなテイストが反映されていて、ちょっとした遊び心を感じられる。テリーからは、“ビューティフル！”、“ロマンチック！”の言葉が尽きず。。。

These are some of the photos (below) taken in their main building. When we arrived at the inn, we were escorted to the spacious lobby, and we enjoyed a cup of green tea and sweets. They have a wide selection of yukata (Japanese bathrobe/pajama) and guests can pick one they like and wear it inside the inn. They also had a beautiful library and reading area.

本館（下写真）はこんな感じ。
まず旅館に到着すると広々としたロビーで抹茶と和菓子をいただく。
ロビーの脇には、色デザイン豊かなセレクションの浴衣が並べてあって、ここで好きな浴衣を選んぶことが出来るのが嬉しい。男性はデザインは一種類なんだけれど、サイズはいろいろアリ。ＬＬサイズもあって、テリーもオッケイ。
本館には、こじんまりとしながらも興味深い本や写真集が並んだ図書館、読書室もあり。今回は一泊二日の旅だったけれど、数日ゆっくりと泊まりながら、ここで読書を楽しむのも良いなあ、なんて。

Terry and I, of course, enjoyed taking their hot spring bath. In this inn they had one large bath, four small baths (needs reservation), and separate guest houses had their own private outdoor bath in addition to a regular bathroom inside the house.

そして、お楽しみはもちろん温泉！この旅館は、屋外大露天風呂の他に、貸切が出来るこじんまりとした露天風呂が四つ（二つ目の写真がその一つ）、そして、私達が泊まった離れにもプライベートな屋外露天風呂付き（三番目の写真）。

I wish I had a funny story to share about our first onsen (hot spring) experience together. But actually Terry adjusted well and quickly to all the Japanese traditional manners, and I don’t think he had any embarrassing or silly moments, unfortunately ;), and fortunately 🙂 He did have a little problem at the other onsen (hot spring) we went to. When he went to the public bath, he saw others go through a door to an outdoor bath. When he, too, tried to go, he could not open the door. He tried to push and pull, but it didn’t open. Later he found that he had to slide it to the side! (He went back to the bath the next morning and enjoyed the outdoor bath.)

温泉は今回初体験だったテリー。
残念なことに（！）笑えるような失敗談は提供してくれなかった～。
というのも、以前日本に一緒に行ったときに、テリー、私の父とゴルフに行ったことがあって、そのときにいわゆる公共風呂（？）というものを体験。なので、今回も基本（笑）は出来ていたから、というのが大きかったかも。

この下呂温泉ではなくて、鳥羽の温泉に行った時、ちょっとかわいそうだったのは、テリー、大浴場から屋外の露天風呂へ出るドアを開けることが出来なかったこと。
他の人が出て行くのを見ていたので、自分も行こうとしたら、押しても引いても開かなくって、あきらめたそう。何でそんな簡単にあきらめちゃったの？と聞いたら、ドアの横にあった張り紙に書いてあることが読めず、“それが、もしかしたら、“出入り禁止”、とか、“大きい人禁止”（笑）、とか書いてあったらまずいなあ、と思って”、とのこと（苦笑）。確かに字が読めない、っていうのはこういう時に困るんだろうなあ。（テリーは次の日の早朝、いそいそともう一度露天風呂に出かけていき満喫したよう（笑。）（追記：このドアはスライド式、横に開くものでした。）

今回、何と言っても、嬉しいなあ、と思ったのは、夫が何にでも挑戦してその経験を楽しんでくれる人であったこと。今回の温泉、楽しさも二倍になった。次回は日本で何を一緒に体験しようか、考えるのが楽しみでしょうがない。
