Strawberry Swirl Bread
Last time I went back to Japan, these bread loaf pans were some of the things on my list to get.
I actually ordered them online first and had them shipped to my parents’ house so that I could just pick them up from their place.
I quickly fell in love with this unique shape. It’s long but when you slice the loaf, each slice is so small and cute!
I usually don’t go for the “cuteness” that many Japanese things are famous for (e.g., “Hello Kitty”!!), but this one, I have to admit I couldn’t resist (lol).
I was excited to make bread in these pans, but I finally got to do so just last weekend. I can’t believe I waited for over a year!
These bread loaves are pretty to look at, but they are also very tasty with natural strawberry flavor (from ground freeze dried strawberries).
Strawberry Swirl Bread (makes 2 6cm x 6cm x 25cm loaves) adapted from this recipe
250g bread flour
35g sugar
3g salt
6g dry yeast
10g powdered milk
40g butter, room temperature
50g egg
100g water, lukewarm
2 tablespoons powdered freeze dry strawberries1. Combine yeast and water in a bowl. Stir and let the yeast dissolve.
2. Add all the other ingredients except for butter and powdered strawberries. Mix well. Knead.
3. Add butter. Continue to knead.
4. Divide it into two. Form a smooth ball with one half. Roll the other half out. Sprinkle the powdered strawberries. Knead for a few minutes to make sure that the strawberry powder is well mixed in. Form a ball.
5. place each ball in a separate bowl. Cover with plastic wrap. Let it rise until doubled in bulk for about an hour.
6. Divide each ball into two different sized ones: larger one should be 65g. Roll out the larger ones to make rectangular sheets (25cm x 16cm) and the smaller ones to make slightly smaller rectangular sheets .
7. Place the smaller one (strawberry) on the larger one (plain). Place the smaller one (plain) on the smaller one (strawberry). Roll them to form two logs. Place them in the loaves. Cover with plastic wrap. Let them rise for about 40 minutes until they almost reach the top of the pans.
8. Bake at 190F for 25 minutes.
