Julie and Julia

This is probably the first post without any food pictures in my blog. Terry and I just got back from the movie theater. Today was the opening day for the movie, “Julie and Julia“. I was so looking forward to seeing this movie. Actually I can’t remember the last time I went to see a movie on its opening day.
The movie is about Julia Child, the famous cookbook author, who introduced french cooking to the States in the 60’s, and Julie who took a challenge of cooking all the five hundred some dishes listed in Julia’s cookbook in one year. Julia Child, or I should say Meryl Streep, was absolutely adorable, and it was such a joy to see the two women who have such a strong passion for cooking. I could totally relate to them when I saw them getting excited about fresh vegetables or getting seriously upset about burned stew… I was actually relieved to see that. Well, I guess I’m not the only one to feel like just lying on the kitchen floor and crying when food doesn’t turn out the way you hoped.
This movie is definitely about cooking, or love for cooking. But this movie is also about the two love stories. I couldn’t help noticing how supportive both Julia and Julie’s husbands were when they were going through the journey of their cooking projects. Julia had Paul, and Julie has Eric. Watching the four of them in the movie just reminded me how wonderful and patient my husband has been all these years. He has always been a great support of my love for cooking and he often rescues me both technically and emotionally from cooking-related catastrophe. I try not to sound too mushy, but he is a saint to me, and I hope he doesn’t mind me calling him that…

ジュリー・アンド・ジュリア（新作映画）

今回は多分このブログ初、写真ナシで。
今テリーと映画館から戻ったところ。
今日は、“Julie and Julia(ジュリー・アンド・ジュリア)”という新作映画初公開日だった。
これは公開される前からかなり気になっていた映画。
というのも、料理が主題の映画だから。。。
主役は、ジュリア・チャイルドとジュリー・パウエルという二人の女性。
ジュリア・チャイルドは１９６０年代にフランス料理をアメリカに紹介したことで有名な料理家。
彼女の料理本は伝説的な人気本。
ジュリーは、ジュリアの本に載っている５００を超えるレシピを一年で全て作り、それをブログで記録したことで最近人気になったブロガー。
数十年の離れた時代、ジュリアとジュリーのそれぞれの奮闘を交互に交えながら、料理を通して自分を再発見した二人の女性の話が描かれている。
ジュリア・チャイルド役のメリル・ストリ－プがとにかくはまり役。
ジュリア・チャイルドは独特の話し方で有名な人だけれど、見ているだけで、こっちまで微笑まずにはいられなくなる。
ジュリアとジュリー、共通点はもちろん料理なんだけれども、その他には、理解のある夫を二人とも持っている（いた）こと。
料理に没頭する（時にし過ぎる（笑））妻を支え励ますこの二人の男性の姿がいつも彼女達の陰にいた。
詰めものをした鶏肉を床に落として台無しにしてしまったジュリーがキッチンの床に大の字になって泣き出すところを見て、“げっ、私と同じ”、と思ったのは、私だけではなく、夫もだったよう（笑）。
映画を見終わった直後、“映画どう思った”と聞くと、夫、“君を見ているようだった”って。
私の作るものをいつも大量のほめ言葉でほめてくれて、失敗をして落ち込んでいる時はジョークやらなんかで立ち直らせてくれる夫。
映画の中で、“あなたは私にとっては、ブレッドにとってバターのような存在（お互いなくてはならない、というような意味）”、という台詞が出てきたけれど、テリーも私にとってはバターみたいな存在なんだな～とあらためて思ったりして（と、日本語で言うとやっぱり照れる～（笑））。
