Father Hennepin Festival

Our niece, Kayla, is visiting Minnesota from Arkansas this month, and Terry and I are lucky to be able to spend a few days with her this week. We heard that our other niece, Amanda, would be in the parade at Father Hennepin Festival, so we decided to go see her yesterday afternoon. It was great to see Amanda in her school band and to see other family members who were also there to see Amanda. After the festival, Terry and I enjoyed various fair foods: cheese curds, a corn dog, a hamburger, and mini donuts. The cheese curds were greasy as they were supposed to be and absolutely delicious. We then watched Kayla trying several different rides. I went on one ride with her; it had been over 20 years since last time I was on a ride like that. Kayla said it was not a scary one and even a small child could go on that ride. I thought I’d fly out a few times, but it was a lot of fun.

夏祭り：パレードとカーニバル

今月は姪っ子のケイラがアーカンソー州から夏休みを利用してミネソタに遊びに来ている。
ミネソタに滞在中は親戚まわりをしているんだけれど、今週はうちの番、ということで、木曜日からうちに泊まりにきている。
昨日は、別の姪っ子、アマンダが近所の祭りのパレードにマーチングバンドの一員として参加する、ということで、三人で見にいった。
アマンダを見るために、他の親戚もたくさん集まったので、道の脇で何だかちょっとしたパーティーになったのが楽しかった。
パレードの後は、カーニバルへ。
祭りは金曜日から日曜日までなんだけれど、その間、遊園地で見かけるような乗り物や露店、出店、そして、えさをあげたり触ったりできるちょっとしたミニ動物園などが、町の一角に設置される。
夜のカーニバルっていうのは、独特なネオンの光にボリューム大の音楽、人の声にゲームから聞こえる音なんかが入り混じって、ちょっと非日常的で、マジカルな雰囲気を醸し出す。
現実から離れて、ちょっと別世界に入り込んでしまったような感じ。
ケイラは１４歳、まだまだ遊園地の乗り物が楽しい時期。
私も一つだけ、彼女にせがまれて一緒に乗ってしまった。
彼女が言うには、“全然コワくないヤツだから”。。。
でも、結構スリルがあって、こういう乗り物なんて、私は２０年以上ぶりだったからか、なかなか楽しめてしまった。
私はこういう祭りに行くとやっぱり食べることが楽しみなので、いろいろ祭りならではの食べ物を堪能。

写真に写っているのは、チーズカード（ｃｈｅｅｓｅ ｃｕｒｄｓ：複数で、チーズカーズ）と呼ばれるこの辺りでは人気の出店スナック。
水分を切ったチーズに衣をつけて揚げたもの。
脂っこいし、カロリーがめちゃめちゃ高そうなんだけれど、美味しい。
テリーと争うように食べてあっという間に平らげてしまった（苦笑）。
