Honey-Glazed Five-Spice Ribs

I’ve never used five-spice powder before. But surprisingly when I checked our spice cabinet, there it was in the way back, hiding from all the other spices. I don’t think it was Terry who bought this rather exotic spice mix, so it must be me who for some reason decided to buy, probably hoping to make something exotic with it some day. Well that day came. The five-spice powder is spicy, sweet, and different from any other things I’ve ever tasted. It’s probably not for everybody, as it has a very strong distinct flavor, but Terry and I found the flavor interesting and enjoyed the ribs. Terry is very cool as he is always willing to try new things and he can appreciate them.

五香粉（ファイブスパイス）風味の骨付きポークリブ

五香粉（ファイブスパイス）、なるものを使うレシピを見つけて、面白そう、と思って作ってみたもの。

五香粉、こんなものうちの近くで見つかるのか、と思っていたら、実は我が家のスパイス棚の奥にひっそりと隠れていたのを発見してびっくり。

封は切ってあったもののほとんど使ってない状態。

初めて使ってみたけれど、これがなかなか悪くない。
甘い香りとツンとした香りが混ざり合ってなんとも複雑でエキゾチック。

で、出来た骨付きポークもエキゾチックな風味。
夫も、こんな味は今まで試したことがないけど美味しい、と食べてくれた。

今スパイス瓶のレベルを見てみたら、五香粉っていうのは、スターアニス、フェンネル、シナモン、クローブ、ペッパーで出来ているものらしい。

Bacon Tempura with Corn Salad

I got this idea again from Food Network. When Terry and I saw bacon tempura served at some restaurant, I knew I had to try this. It just sounded and looked so dangerously delicious! Terry suggested I should fry bacon crispy before making it into tempura, and it was a great idea. The super crispy bacon tempura has become one of my favorite snacks. Too bad, though, I can’t eat it everyday… Technically I could, but when I think about the amount of cholesterol, I won’t dare!

ベーコンの天ぷら

先日テレビで、ベーコンの天ぷらなるものを出しているレストランを見て以来、どうしても試してみたくって。

テリーのアドバイスで、ベーコンは天ぷらにする前にあらかじめかりかりになるまで炒めて。

ぱりっと出来上がったベーコンの天ぷら、美味しい～！！
普段飲まない私も冷たいビールが飲みたくなってきてしまう（笑）。

コレステロールのことを考えるとそうそう作れないけれど、時々飲み会用のスナックとして出すにはいいかも。

今回はテレビで見たレストランがやっていたようにさっぱりとしたコーンサラダと一緒に。

Sweet and Sour Pork

Terry had a chance to try sweet and sour pork at a Chinese restaurant in Japan. I was surprised to find out he liked this dish. Terry usually does not like vinegar, so I assumed this was not for him. Since we got back from Japan, I have wanted to make this dish for him, and I had a chance to do so tonight. Sweet and sour pork is a popular dish in Japan, but I’ve never made this myself before. It actually turned out very well, and Terry and I both enjoyed it very much. I will definitely make this again.

手早く酢豚

先月日本に帰国した時に、たまたま食べる機会があった酢豚。

私がＯＬ時代に時々行っていた中華料理店にどうしても行きたく、テリーを連れて行った時のこと。

私は昔食べていた焼きそばと決めていたのだけれど、夫には何を勧めたら良いのか全く分からず、ラランチセットの一つを注文してあげたときに思いがけず出てきたのが、酢豚。

酢嫌いな夫、食べられないかな～、と心配した私を横目に、“コレは美味しい！”、とすっかり気に入ってしまった様子。

で、今日早速うちでも作ってあげた。

酢豚、実は初めて作ったかも！

料理はアメリカに来てからするようになったので、実はこういう日本の食卓によくあがる定番料理って作ったことがないものが結構たくさんあったりする。

揚げ物はなるべくやりたくないので、今回も塩こしょうと小麦粉をまぶした豚肉は多目の油で、炒め揚げする感じで。

ソースとかたれはたっぷりが好きな夫のためにも、今回は多目にタレ（って呼ぶのかな）を作って。
初めてのわりには、なかなか良い感じ。

夫にもとっても喜んでもらえたし、私も久々の酢豚に満足。

夫は当たり前のようにご飯にかけていたので、私もそうしてみたけど、コレがなかなかイケた。
酢豚丼？。。。
