One of pleasant surprises I encountered in my hometown was that several wonderful French and Italian restaurants have recently opened. One night we were so relaxed after a long day of visiting various touristy places\u3001 and we didn’t want to drive too far to have dinner. My parents suggested walking to a newly opened Italian restaurant close by. Terry and I agreed, thinking walking would be a good idea as we were seriously lacking exercise. Actually, it didn’t turn out to be a good exercise, as it was so close, only three minutes away(!), but the restaurant was a great find. It was located in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by vegetable fields! Their atmosphere was casual and relaxed, the menu was easy to read, and all the food was super tasty and reasonably priced. I wish we had a restaurant like this in our neighborhood in MN. Later my sister told me that this restaurant is very popular as people like their use of organic and locally grown produce in their dishes. Interestingly, many restaurants my parents took us to during our stay were small (owned and operated by a couple) and also proud of using organic and locally grown vegetables and fruits. Another local Italian restaurant my sister and her husband took us to was owned by someone who went to high school with my sister. I really liked it when the hostess explained where main ingredients came from (they were mostly grown in their garden) presenting our dishes. At one point, she asked my sister, “Do you remember ***(name), who went to the same high school with us? He is now a farmer and these strawberries on your dessert plates are all from his farm”. I thought that was really cool!<\/p>\n

I would also like to note a few quick observations Terry and I made about food served in Japan. One was that in general people use much less salt in Japan. The first few times Terry and I looked at each other and whispered “this needs salt!”. But then we soon realized it was not them, but us! who are used to probably a little oversalted food. Another thing was that their portion size was much smaller than what we get here in the states. When we ate out, I was shocked to see a small sized dishes (particularly in a several-course meal). But then I realized that I was pleasantly full at the end of the meal. It was actually really nice not feeling stuffed BEFORE a dessert!<\/p>\n
