Terry and I escaped the big snow storm by one day and left for Memphis last Friday to begin our vacation. We flew to Memphis, spent the weekend there, and then we took an Amtrak train from Memphis to New Orleans…<\/p>\n

–Graceland<\/a>
\nI’m not a big fan of Elvis, but since we were in Memphis, we thought it would be fun to take a quick look at his house. Once we got there, however, we changed our minds and decided to take a tour. After all, Graceland is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Memphis, if it’s not the most popular. It turned out to be a very interesting experience. We got to tour not only his house but also his collection of cars and private airplanes. His car collection is quite impressive. It was sad to learn that he died at age 42. It seems so young to fully enjoy life, particularly when I’m quickly approaching the age myself…<\/p>\n

–B.B. King’s Blues Club<\/a>
\nAfter the visit to Graceland, we headed downtown Memphis. We strolled down Beale Street and had dinner at B.B. King. I had BBQ ribs and they were one of the best ribs I’ve ever had, and Terry loved his chicken fried chicken. The live music was also wonderful. The musician playing on that evening was a young man named Will Tucker. He looks so young but apparently he knows what he is doing. A great guitarist and singer.<\/p>\n

\nThe main reason for visiting Memphis was to see our friends, Mick and Patrisha who moved from Minnesota to Memphis a few years ago. They opened their beautiful home to us. Terry and I enjoyed our fun yet relaxing weekend with them so much. The highlight of our stay was the Sunday dinner Patrisha cooked for us. Beef roast, sweet potato, corn bread, collard greens, and more… Everything was delicious, but her collard greens were out of this world!! Terry and I contributed by mixing up a clementine cocktail. Mick and Patrisha, thank you again!<\/p>\n

–The American Sector<\/a>
\nTerry and I unexpectedly ran into this restaurant when we were strolling down Magazine street. This is one of Chef John Besh’s restaurants. I loved everything about this restaurant. The menu was interesting consisting of traditional American food, New Orleans favorites, and many seafood dishes, with a strong French influence. The restaurant was very spacious and the decor was casual but beautiful, our server was knowledgeable, and the food was delicious and beautifully presented. The complimentary pickles were the best pickles I’ve ever tasted.<\/p>\n

\nOn the other hand, another restaurant of chef Besh, “Luke” that I chose for my birthday dinner unfortunately didn’t impress me as much. The food was good, but I guess I expected more. I tried their Tuesday special, Cochon de Lait. The mustard served with this dish was very good, but I thought the grits and stewed greens that came with the dish were just okay. The dish was overall a bit heavy for me…<\/p>\n

\nThere were so many things I was looking forward to experiencing in New Orleans, but seafood, particularly oyster was on top of my list. I got to enjoy raw oyster at Desire Bistro which was conveniently located inside the hotel where we were staying. Their oysters were absolutely delicious! I didn’t need any sauce but just fresh lemon juice. When I have such fresh seafood, I ask myself why I’m not living on the coast… Their deep-fried soft shell crab was excellent as well. The decor of the restaurant is casual, yet charming and chic.<\/p>\n

\nWhen you are in New Orleans, you have to have beignets at Cafe du Monde. The amount of powdered sugar the beignet is served with always shocks me but this really is a great treat!<\/p>\n

\nA few more culinary treats Terry and I enjoyed during our stay in New Orleans were crab cake salad and muffaletta sandwich, both found at French Market. Terry loved this crab cake salad so much that he went back the next day again for lunch. I fell in love with muffaletta sandwich (it was my first muffaletta sandwich experience), and I’d love to make one myself sometime (or find a restaurant in Minnesota who serves it).<\/p>\n

\nThis was our second trip to New Orleans. Last time we were there 8 years ago. During our first visit Terry and I saw this blues singer, “Big Al” at a bar on Bourbon Street and we really enjoyed his performance. This time we were so anxious to find out if he was still there. After all it has been eight years and lots of things have happened since then in New Orleans… So we were thrilled to see him on the stage again and he still had a great voice! We requested our favorite song from his CD we purchased from our first trip, “Members Only”, two nights in a row! The blues bar is called Funky Pirate. The servers there are very nice, too.<\/p>\n

We came back to Minnesota last night. It’s nice to be home, but adjusting to this 15 degree weather is not fun, especially after enjoying a warm afternoon with 75 degree temperature in New Orleans. I do look forward to cooking some Southern inspired food now, though.<\/p>\n
