I never thought I would find it here in the states, but fortunately I ran into this mentaiko, which was pre-packaged for the use of pasta sauce, at a Japanese grocery store. For lunch I decided to use this, but I did something that I’d never done before; I mixed mentaiko with cream cheese (and a little sugar). Mentaiko has a pretty strong seafood flavor as well as being quite spicy. By mixing it with cream cheese, I was able to make the flavor less intense and I found it a great match. <\/p>\n
I used this mixture as a pasta sauce and also as a spread for bread. For the pasta, sprinkle chopped green onion and nori (dry seaweed), and drizzle olive oil right before serving. For the bread, I sprinkled chopped green onion and sliced cucumber (to add some crunchiness). I put the alfalfa (that I originally intended to placed on the plate as a garnish) on top of the bread, and it was really good, too. You can add salt and pepper to both dishes, but the mentaiko is quite salty and spicy, so I’d suggest tasting first before doing so. <\/p>\n
Please help us promote our blog by clicking on the following buttons.
