Asparagus Hod Dogs and Chili Dogs
I’m not a big hot dog fan, but when we go to Costco, I’m often tempted to stop at the food court and get their hot dog for a snack.
Whenever I eat a hot dog, however, I feel I want more vegetables, something more than just a few onion pieces.
So, these hot dogs and chili dogs definitely satisfy my “I want to have more vegetables” syndrome (lol)!
The most important thing about making these asparagus hot dogs is not to cook asparagus too long.
You want it to be tender but still nice and crisp when you bite into it.
Another trick used for this asparagus tempra is using sparkling water instead of regular water and adding a little vinegar for the batter.
They really help make tempura light and crisp.
– 8 stalks asparagus
– tempura batter (1/2 cup plus more flour, 1/2 cup sparkling water, 3~4 ice cubes, 1 teaspoon white vinegar)
– canola oil for frying
– salt
4 hot dog buns
1/4 cabbage, thinly sliced
tempeh chili
– canola oil
– 1 clove garlic, chopped
– 1/2 onion, chopped
– 8 oz tempeh, cut into small pieces
– 1/2 cup water
– 1 tablespoon soy sauce
– 1 teaspoon dark miso
– 1 tablespoon tomato paste
– 1~2 tablespoons sugar
– chili powder
– cumin
– salt and pepper
ketchup and mustard
1/3 cup onion chopped
1/3 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1. Make tempura batter. Mix well all the ingredients. Add extra flour to keep the same consistency (ice cubes melt and make the batter watery).
2. Coat each asparagus stalk with the batter and fry in oil.
3. Salt.
4. To make asparagus hot dogs, put sliced cabbage and asparagus tempura in buns and serve with ketchup and mustard.
5. Make tempeh chili. Cook garlic and onion in oil for a few minutes. Add tempeh and cook for another few minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients. Mix well.
6. To make chili dogs, place sliced cabbage and asparagus tempura in hot dog buns. Pour the chili over them. Serve with chopped onion and shredded cheese.

さくっと天ぷらにしたアスパラガスをソーセージに見立てて作ったホットドッグとチリドッグ!
今回は、炭酸水を使ったり、酢を少し入れて天ぷらタネを作った手間のおかげか、本当にさくさくっと美味しい天ぷらが出来上がりました。
アスパラガスはさっと揚げるだけで、あまり柔らかくなりすぎないようにするのがポイント。
シンプルに、キャベツの千切りにアスパラ天ぷらを挟んで、ケチャップとマスタードでいただいてもいいし、
チリドッグにしても良し。
チリドッグは、テンペで作ったチリをたっぷりのせて、玉ねぎ、チェダーチーズでいただきます。
