Currant Citrusade

Terry and I went to the farmer’s market in St. Paul for the first time a few weekends ago. It was much smaller than the Minneapolis one, but all the produce looked very fresh, and I found a few interesting things, such as garlic scapes, garlic chive, and red currants (photo: below).

Terry told me his grandmother used to have currant bushes in her backyard and she would make jars of currant jam every year. I had tried store-bought currant jam but never tasted fresh currants. They were so tart, and I now know why you would want to add sugar to these little guys.

I wanted to make jam with the currants I purchased, but I simply did not have enough to make a jar. Actually I only had enough to be able to make a quarter cup of syrup. This currant citrusade was made from freshly squeezed lemon and lime, water, sugar, and my currant syrup.

先日初めてセント・ポール市内のファーマーズマーケット（朝市）にテリーと二人で行ってみた。

お隣のミネアポリス市のファーマーズマーケットに比べると規模は小さいのだけれど、売っている野菜や果物はどれもとっても新鮮で、しかもちょっと普通のスーパーでは見かけないような面白いものも見つけた。
で、購入したのは、ニラ、にんにくの芽、そして、アカスグリ（レッドカラントとこちらでは呼ばれる）（写真下）。

アカスグリは市販のジャムのものは食べたことがあるのだけれど、フレッシュな実をそのまま口にするのは初めて。
一粒口に入れてみると、酸っぱ～っ！！
とてもそのままでは食べられぬ。。。

で、ジャムを作ろうとしたものの、出来たのは約４分の１カップ分のシロップ。。。

レモンとライムの果汁を絞って、水、砂糖を混ぜたら、貴重な（笑）アカスグリシロップを少し入れてやる。

きれいなピンク色が可愛い。
